How tall will dill grow
Timing Direct sow late spring through summer, or sow when cucumbers are transplanted, to coincide maturity for pickling. Dill tends to bolt if transplanted, so it is best direct sown. Stagger the harvest by sowing every weeks for a constant supply of fresh leaves. Seeds should germinate in days. Starting Dill seeds need some light to germinate. Growing Ideal pH: 5. Grow in moderately rich soil in full sun. Use it at the rate of three ounces per ten feet of row.
For dill grown outdoors in containers or indoors, use a liquid fertilizer at one-half the label recommended strength every four to six weeks. Direct seeding Plant dill in a location that receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. Choose a spot protected from high winds because the tall, hollow stalks can easily blow over if you do not stake them.
Begin sowing seeds after the danger of spring frost is passed. You can harvest several crops during the summer and fall by planting seeds every two to three weeks through midsummer.
Set the seeds one-fourth of an inch deep in rows two feet apart. When seedlings are two inches high, thin them to stand inches apart. Keep the soil free of weeds and relatively moist.
Growing indoors Growing dill indoors is possible, as long as you provide enough light. Dill leaf Harvest green dill foliage anytime during the growing season until the umbrella-like flower clusters open. Dill loses its flavor quickly. Use it fresh as soon after picking as possible. You can dry dill foliage by hanging the plant upside down in a warm, breezy place out of direct sunlight. Like many other herbs, drying loses most of the flavor. The bright color usually remains. Sow the seeds directly in the ground from April through May, after all danger of frost has passed.
Do not transplant them. They should germinate in 10 to 14 days. Dill can also be easily grown in containers, both indoors and outdoors. Choose a deep container to accommodate the tall plant and its long roots.
Use normal potting compost and keep the plants well watered. If the container is inside, place the plants where they will receive at least 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
You may need to support the plants with a stake. The dill will be ready for harvest within about 8 weeks after the seeds were sown. Figure 3. Fertilizer may be broadcast spread on the surface throughout the planting or applied as a side dressing applied to the soil on or around the sides of the plant. Do not apply it directly with the seed.
