How long was walter dean myers in the army

I had a speech impediment and often found myself leading with my fists when teased. I found solace in books.

My mother read to me from a very young age. Reading pushed me to discover worlds beyond my landscape, especially during dark times when my uncle was murdered and my family became dysfunctional with alcohol and grief. I wrote well in high school and an English teacher bless her! I ended up dropping out of high school although now Stuyvesant High claims me as a graduate and joined the army on my 17th birthday.

After the army, I was struggling through life—holding on just enough to survive. A turning point for me was the discovery of a short story by James Baldwin about the black urban experience. Myers wrote more than a hundred books during his long career.

Myers joined the Army when he was seventeen years old and served for three years prior to the Vietnam War. He wrote Fallen Angels , in part, in tribute to his younger brother who was killed in Vietnam. In Fallen Angels I wanted to dispel the notion of war as either romantic or simplistically heroic. The rawness of war depicted was looked at aghast, the references to the racial animosity of the sixties was frowned upon, as was the frequent use of casual profanity.

Over the years the book was one of the most challenged in schools and frequently banned. Walter Dean Myers will always be loved by every single person that read his book.

He gave and still conitues to give people hope for a change. Walker Dean Myers. I do not really enjoy reading, but your books are great! They keep me interested and I learn some good things about myself sometimes. I will continue to read your books until I have finished them all. I am now doing an author study for my language arts class on you and some of your books. Slam and Hoops are my two favorites because I love to play basketball. Was completely mesmerized by Mr. Myers storytelling ability and sense of humanity.

Thank you for the inspiration, and RIP. This book is so cool I loveeeeww it its so awsome I wish he was still alive I like how it talks about devil worship. This is really nice. I am currently reading one of his books for the first time,Somewhere In the Darkness. What caught my eye was his last name, Myers, well my last name is Myers too. So I decided to look him up, just being curious, well I find this information verry intressting, not only did I want to find out about this man I was also searching for some advice too, I was looking for some insparation to make a book like Ive always wanted but when I try…I just lose all focas and I wonder off from it and when I go to return to it after a few days I dont find it too intressting, so I scrap it.

But this does help alot. Thank you.
