The movie industry has grown tremendously and because it now plays such a big part in our lives, its influence has grown also.
A movie can act as a history lesson giving us information about real events. Take the movie, Gladiator for instance. It won an award for best picture in A great film and really successful. The film is basically fictional but at the same time shows real life historical situations.
The political life of Rome at the time and the life of Gladiators. We get a picture of how life was experienced during that period and learn something about Rome and its history. In the film, City of God, the viewer is taken on a journey through the underworld of Rio De Janeiro, the life of which very few of us would ever get to see or experience. Companies are eager to have their products shown in movies and will pay a lot of money to have them do so.
If the main character in the movie is constantly drinking Coca-Cola, it is likely that this will influence the audience to also want to buy some. The film Nerve is an example of this where Apple products were used so successfully and it was a big advertisement for the purchasing of the new Apple product.
To go a step further, it may be that productions cast popular actors specifically to advertise a product. It seems that people like to copy their idols and therefore it may be enough to just have their favorite celebrity drinking Coca Cola to have them want to do the same.
People try to imitate what they see in films. These films that have changed our lives outside the theater in tangible ways are excellent examples of the important role film plays in the world at large.

However, the positives on this one do probably outweigh the negative. Films inspire people to get in the industry and create dreams. Most actors, directors, cinematographers, etc. This is a very important aspect of how films affect society: they inspire. They inspire individuals to work towards their dreams and inspire them to get into the industry. Not only that, good movies teach valuable lessons.
